Gellibrand River
environmental flows study

Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (Corangamite CMA) is in the process of developing environmental water requirements for the rivers and streams in the Gellibrand River Catchment. The project will recommend the flows required to achieve a 'healthy ecosystem', as defined in the Victorian River Health Strategy.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment will use the results of the project in the development of the Regional Sustainable Water Strategy. This is an Our Water Our Future initiative that will look at re-balancing water supply demand needs and river health requirements, considering the range of water supply options available.

The Gellibrand River catchment is situated in south west Victoria, within the Otway Coast Basin. The river headwaters rise on the northern face of the Otway Ranges. The river travels southwest to the township of Gellibrand, then west to Bunker Hill before turning south-west to flow through alluvial terraces and floodplains and enter the Southern Ocean near Princetown. The total catchment area is approximately 1200 km2 and consists of eucalyptus forests and cleared grazing land for beef and dairy cattle. Major tributaries include Love Creek, Lardner Creek, Carlisle River, Kennedys Creek and Chapple Creek.
