WORK COMMENCES ON NEW ROWING LANDING IN THE BARWON RIVER

The Barwon River rowing landing is getting a much needed makeover.

Rowing events bring in over $2.7M in economic benefits to Geelong annually. Built in the early 1990’s by Barwon Water the rowing landing is a critical piece of infrastructure supporting rowing events in the Barwon River. In November of 1995 floods extensively damaged the landing, tearing it from its foundations and washing it, largely intact, downstream to Landy Field. It was relocated back and reinstated in its current location, but the depth of the piling and structural stability remained an issue.

In 2015, the Corangamite CMA commissioned a report into the existing deck structure, and options for its replacement including preferred materials, durability, safety and cost considerations. The report recommended that the landing be completely replaced as soon as possible.

Today the Hon Lisa Neville MP, Minister for Water, announced $390,000 in funding toward the $850,000 project to replace the 200m rowing landing on the Barwon River. City of Greater Geelong, Rowing Geelong, and the Corangamite CMA, have also contributed funding to the project.

The replacement of the rowing landing will greatly enhance the community’s ability to value Geelong’s major waterway. The Barwon river is identified as a priority waterway in the Corangamite Waterway Strategy and is the focus of large scale restoration in the Victorian Government’s new water plan, Water for Victoria, and this project delivers shared environmental, social and economic benefits for the Geelong community

The tender for the replacement of the landing was awarded in August 2016. Demolition works on the old landing commenced on the 31st of October, and building works on the new landing commenced on the 7th November. The new rowing landing is expected to be completed by the 23rd December (weather permitting).
